It's not diet, it's exercise.
(well, more precisely (as I read the article), it's not eating-very-few-calories, it's eating-very-healthy-calories-and-exercising)

From the article:
According to Bell, people who are fat on the inside are essentially on the threshold of being obese. They eat too many fatty, sugary foods — and exercise too little to work it off — but they are not eating enough to actually be fat. Scientists believe we naturally accumulate fat around the belly first, but at some point, the body may start storing it elsewhere.

As I read the article, it's yet another way to scare people about their health, what they eat, the-monster-of-obesity, and all the related scare tactics. Please observe that the whole study was 800 people (which is better than many junk studies, but hardly enough to be statistically useful). Also, it is not a long-term study so they have no idea whether there are any risk factors involved; they're just guessing, and they admit it, but the article is structured so it's easy not to notice that it's all guesswork.

Finally, in a classic case of "burying the lede," at the end they admit that even observable fat is a minor risk factor. Maybe they saw this article, which is not junk science, and represents nearly fifty years of studies of large and small groups from a variety of perspectives. The real truth is getting some attention, and the fearmongers have to acknowledge it, so they do it as quietly and unobtrusively as they can.

So...is there a list somewhere of the sources of very-healthy protein?

So far, meat is bad and wheat gluten (?) is bad. Is anything left?

(Here's hoping your birthday was all you wanted it to be and that the coming year is fantastic for you!) :D
